Sudan massacre as militia monsters rape, murder and maim hundreds of pro-democracy protesters

MILITIA in Sudan carried out mass rapes as they attacked a pro-democracy protest camp in the capital Khartoum, it has been reported.

After the paramilitaries moved into the camp outside the army’s headquarters, 70 rape cases were reported as well as 100 dead and 700 injured.

The UN has raised fears the country is in danger of sliding into «human rights abyss» in the aftermath of the armed forces crackdown on pro-democracy campaigners.

Sudan has been in turmoil after the successful ousting of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s strongman president of 30 years, in April.

According to The Guardian, a doctor with access to figures compiled by a pro-reform committee of medics said hospitals recorded more than 70 cases of rape in the attack and its aftermath.

At the Royal Care hospital, a doctor said it treated five female and three male victims of rape.

At a second hospital in the south of the city, a medical source said it had received two rape cases, including one who was attacked by four Rapid Support Forces paramilitaries.

The Rapid Support Forces are a notoriously brutal militia with roots in the conflict in the western region of Sudan, which began in 2003.

Over 100 people were killed when the security forces dispersed the protest sit in on June 3 and around 700 wounded.

BRUTAL MILITIA

The warning about the human rights situation came from the UN Human Rights Council, which called on for an independent investigation into violations against peaceful protesters in Sudan.

A statement from the experts says they’re alarmed at reports of numerous deaths.

The experts called for an «independent investigation» to be set up by the council which opens a new session on June 24.

Around 19 children are among the dead, the Unicef’s executive director Henrietta Fore has said.
A further 49 youngsters have been injured with many more still in danger.

“We have received information that children are being detained, recruited to join the fighting and sexually abused,” she said,

“Schools, hospitals and health centres have been targeted, looted and destroyed. Health workers have been attacked simply for doing their job.”

The Forces for Declaration of Freedom and Change, which represents the protesters’ demand for civilian rule, has called on people to return to work across Sudan, after the three-day general strike.

Businesses reopened and traffic returned to its normal bustle in Khartoum.

Its decision reflected a growing desire for the protest leaders and the ruling military council to avoid a further escalation, after a week of violence.

Royal Ascot 2019: Oisin Murphy picks out his best ride of the meeting as excitement builds

ANTICIPATION is building for Oisin Murphy as the Jockeys Championship leader sets his sights on further Royal Ascot glory.

The County Kerry native, who has set off at a blistering pace in his pursuit of a first title, has thrived on the big stage in recent seasons.

He formed a memorable partnership with Roaring Lion last term, while he broke his Royal Ascot duck in 2017 aboard Godolphin’s Benbatl in the Hampton Court Stakes.

The 23-year-old doubled his tally at Flat racing’s most glamorous festival when steering Signora Cabello to a thrilling success in the Queen Mary and, needless to say, he is hungry for more.

Murphy told Sun Racing: «Every jockey in the world wants to ride at Royal Ascot and get winners there.

«Obviously it’s very competitive and you need the right team of horses behind you, but I think I’ve got a strong book of rides this year.

SHADES OF GREY Five of the best greys to grace Royal Ascot

«When I rode my first winner it was huge, special, a massive relief.

«It was the first time I was going there feeling like I had a genuine chance of a winner there. We got a good trip thankfully and Benbatl showed his class.»

The apple of Murphy’s eye right now is Guildsman, a very promising Archie Watson-trained two-year-old who will tackle the Coventry Stakes on the opening day.

The colt thumped his rivals by six lengths on debut at Goodwood earlier this month, and the recent rainfall won’t harm his chances in the Group 2, for which he is a top-price 12-1 with Hills.

Murphy said: «On the first day I’m really looking forward to Guildsman in the Coventry.

«Archie Watson does brilliantly with his two-year-old’s and this lad bolted up on his debut at Goodwood, he’s a lovely horse.

«This rain will do his chance no harm, we are very unlikely to start on quick ground at this rate and I’m hoping he can start the week off on a good note.

«He’s by Wootton Bassett out of a very stout female line so the soft ground won’t bother him at all.»

As far as established stars go, they don’t come much bigger than multiple Group 1 winner The Tin Man who will be chasing his second win in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Murphy took over from Tom Queally on the seven-year-old in September last year, christening the relationship with a big win in Haydock’s Sprint Cup, and James Fanshawe’s speedster is reported to be ticking along nicely.

Murphy said: «He’s come forward from his prep run at Windsor. James is fantastic at getting his horses to peak on the big day.

«He ran really well on his reappearance. I think it’s important to note the difficulty that horses have carrying a penalty, particularly in sprints.

«He is a top sprinter and a brilliant horse to have an association with.»

Many of Europe’s finest will grace the turf at Ascot next week, but Murphy didn’t hesitate in the slightest when asked which horse he would love to be able to ride.

He said: «Phoenix Of Spain goes to the St James’s Palace with a huge chance.

«I think he will improve for his Irish 2000 Guineas win and it would be great to see Jamie Spencer riding another Group 1 winner at Ascot.»

Sudan massacre: What is happening in Sudan, how many people have been killed and why are people protesting?

SUDAN has been hit by a wave of violence against civilian demonstrators with children among the many dead.

Here is a brief on what has been going on in the African country which is on the edge of a civil war.

What is happening in Sudan?

Sudanese people started protesting in December 2018 against the rule of former President Hassan al-Bashir, who resigned on 11 April 2019.

The army then took over and has been ruling ever since.

But pro-democracy demonstrators want power to be handed to civilians and have been protesting.

A sit in has been staged outside the army headquarters in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum,.

But for the past month the military rulers have been cracking down, with dozens killed.

How many people have been killed?

Security forces have killed more than 100 people in the capital and across the country in a sweeping crackdown, according to protest organisers.

At least 19 children have been killed according to the UN.

It was an alarming turn in the two-month standoff between the protest movement and the military, which removed President Omar al-Bashir from power in April amid a popular uprising against his rule.

Why are people protesting?

The Forces for Declaration of Freedom and Change, which represents the protesters’ demand for civilian rule, called on people to return to work across Sudan, after the three-day general strike.

Its decision reflected a growing desire for the protest leaders and the ruling military council to avoid a further escalation, after a week of violence.

«We are highly optimistic that the negotiations will be resumed, and things will be back to normal and they will achieve an agreement,» said Yousef Hassan, a teacher from Khartoum.

Activists, however, took to social media to criticise the FDFC’s decision, declaring that protest leaders, in calling off the strike, had diminished their ability to pressure the generals to give up power.

«The problem was not calling off the disobedience, but was its abrupt suspension.

It seemed that you are giving orders to people,» said Hammour Ziada, a Sudanese novelist and activist.

Who is Lee Mack?

Lee Mack – real name Lee Gordon McKillop – was born above a pub in Southport, Lancashire, in 1968.

He is best known for writing and starring in his hit BBC sitcom, Not Going Out.

But he started out working in a bingo hall and as a stable boy before becoming a Blue Coat entertainer at Pontins holiday resort at Hemsby in Norfolk.

Lee was sacked from Pontins after appearing on stage drunk and calling an audience member an offensive name.

He came to prominence by winning So You Think You’re Funny at the 1995 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The cheeky comic featured in the original radio version of The Mighty Boosh and had his own show on BBC Radio 2 called The Lee Mack Show.

Lee gave up drinking in 2016 and in 2018 threatened to cancel Not Going Out over its sponsorship by booze firms when it was sold on to other channels.

What TV shows has Lee Mack been in?

Lee joined ITV’s The Sketch Show alongside Tim Vine in 2001 and launched a new programme entitled Lee Mack’s All-Star Cast for BBC in 2011.

And he hosted many panel shows including They Think It’s All Over, Have I Got News For You and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

The 49-year-old, who is now the winner of three British Comedy Awards, has been a team captain in BBC One panel show Would I Lie to You? since 2007, alongside David Mitchell and Rob Brydon — and won the Best Entertainment Performance award at the 2019 TV Baftas for his role in the show.

On March 26, 2018, it was revealed he would be joining the cast of Doctor Who after the fanatic auditioned for a part using his own Tardis.

Lee also featured in the fifteenth series of BBC One’s Who Do You Think You Are?,

Lee Mack has made numerous TV appearances over the years, such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Would I Lie to You?

Is Lee Mack married?

Lee lives in Surrey with his wife, who he married in 2005, Tara MKillop.

The couple have three children, Arlo, Louie and Millie.

What is Lee’s show Not Going Out about?

Not Going Out, which is co-written by Lee Mack and currently showing its tenth series, is the longest-running comedy on the BBC after first airing back in 2006.

The comedy, which was cancelled for a short spell in 2009 only to be reinstated by the BBC soon after, follows the jokes, jibes and general misunderstandings of happy-go-lucky Lee – who plays a fictional version of himself – from a «layabout with big dreams» to a married dad-of-three.

Speaking about series nine to The Express, Lee said: «I decided I wanted to write about my own life, which is man, wife and three children.

«And the options available to us were to slowly progress it or hit the ground running.

«Now I’m actually playing my own age, roughly, rather than younger than I am, which is nice. Also, I was running out of gags about a bloke who fancies his landlady!

«The storylines now aren’t so out there – they have to be based on some reality.»

The show, which premiered on October 6, 2006, and drew 3-4million viewers per episode in 2015,  won the RTS Break-Through Award and the Gold Rose d’Or award for Best Sitcom in 2007.

Brussels bosses forced to admit their OWN fisherman will be locked out of British waters under No Deal Brexit

BRUSSELS bosses admit their own fishermen face being shut out of British waters if we leave without a Brexit deal.

EU officials said continental trawlermen must «prepare for the possibility» they will no longer be able to land catches in UK seas after October 31.

EU countries will be in uproar for being unable to get into British waters in a No Deal

In a new paper they said they will try to get an agreement on fishing with the next British PM but are mobilising funds to prevent mass job losses if that fails.

And the paper warned of the possibility No Deal could spark a free-for-all between coastal nations vying for the remaining fish stocks in EU waters.

The warning will raise hopes for Tory leadership candidates that they may be able to squeak a deal through — as the EU will lose out without one.

And it added the EU will seek «a specific arrangement with the UK in accordance with international law obligations and based on scientific advice» for 2020.

EU officials also berated businesses on the continent for failing to prepare properly for a crash out, ordering them to up their game.

They also claimed that Britain’s economy would take a nose-drive if there’s a No Deal — just as Boris launched his campaign to be leader.

Eurocrats predicted the UK will face «significant disruption» and a «serious negative economic impact» if we leave without an agreement in October.

The Commission said No Deal «very much remains a possible, although undesirable, outcome» given the «political situation» in the UK.

And it stressed: «In a No Deal scenario, the UK will become a third country without any transitional arrangements.

«This will obviously cause significant disruption for citizens and businesses and would have a serious negative economic impact, which would be proportionally much greater in the UK than in the EU.»

Eurocrats said visits to all 27 capitals over the last year had shown «a high degree of preparation by Member States for all scenarios».

Love Island spoiler: Lucie sparks concern as she spends ALL her time with Joe

LOVE Island’s Lucie Donlan sparks concern amongst the girls of the Villa as she continues to spend ALL her time with boyfriend Joe Garratt.

The 21-year-old left pal Amy Hart, 26, upset after she dared to exclusively date Joe Garratt, 22, on the same night the air hostess was asked to be Curtis’ ‘half-girlfriend’.

In the wake of the furore, Amy suggests to Lucie on this evening’s instalment: «We should go and have a girl chat because we never see you anymore. You’re always with your bloody boyfriend!»

Joe, who is also in the kitchen, fires back: «You’re together all the time [referring to Amy and Curtis].»

Which leaves Amy trying to defend herself: «I’m never with Curtis.»

In the Beach Hut, Amy explains why she’s concerned for her friend: «Lucie needed me a lot in the first few days because she needed advice but we never see her anymore.

«Her and Joe just sit on their own. I tried to bring her back into the group because I don’t want her to feel like she isn’t in the group, I was basically told to ‘go away’.»

Following the conversation, Lucie is left upset after Amy confronted her and seeks advice from Joe.

Surfer Lucie laments: «It’s annoying because she is meant to be my closest friend.»

Attempting to comfort her, Joe assures her: «We’ll just worry about what we’re doing.»

Last week, Joe had been compared to the psycho stalker from Netflix drama You after his shock jealous outburst.

The hunk stunned fans when he told Lucie he could no longer trust her after she was chosen to go on a date with boxer Tommy Fury.

The pair had been coupled up for 24 hours after first meeting during Monday’s launch, with newcomer Tommy stealing the blonde beauty in last night’s show.

Joe was left fuming by the steal, ranting to the fellow Islanders about his heartache.

When Lucie returned from her candelit dinner with Tommy, she told Joe that she wanted to go to bed but he demanded that they had a chat first.

The catering company owner slammed the surfer for keeping her options open, and the next day he sniped that he could no longer trust her after she was chosen for the date.

The scenes left fans at home stunned, with many criticising Joe’s possessive behaviour — comparing him to the stalker in You, who is also called Joe.

La Liga fined £225k after using app users’ phone microphones to ‘spy’ on bars illegally screening games

LA LIGA have been fined £225,000 by Spain’s data protection agency for spying on fans via an app.

League officials did not inform users they were utilising the microphones in their mobiles to identify venues that were illegally showing top-flight games.

La Liga admitted the surveillance last year on their highly popular official app, which is used by four million people.

They had infringed several rules, including those of transparency and consent withdrawal.

La Liga will remove the feature from the app by June 30.

The league said this year they reported 600 establishments for illegally broadcasting live games.

Users had to give consent for the app to use their device’s microphone.

That enabled La Liga to remotely activate the mic to try to determine if the user was in a bar or public place showing the football.

They then could use geo-location technology in the app to determine the exact location to find out if it was showing matches illegally.

Bars and the like in Spain must pay around £300 a month for a La Liga subscription.

The Spanish top flight previously said that piracy costs them an estimated £134million a year.

And they said they «profoundly disagree» with the decision to fine, pledging to appeal the decision.

A statement read: «[La Liga] considers that the AEPD [Spain’s national data protection agency] has not made the necessary efforts to understand how the technology works.

«As a result it will challenge the ruling in court to demonstrate that its actions have always been responsible and in accordance with the law.»

Robbie Williams has quit Take That twice — back in 1995 and again in less dramatic fashion in 2011.

Dedicated Take That fans were left sobbing in the mid-90s when it was announced that Robbie would be leaving the band.

He left after he was given an ultimatum by the rest of the Take That members to either clean up his act or quit, as drink and drugs began to control his life.

But, in the tell-all documentary Take That: Look Back, Don’t Stare, Robbie revealed the extent of his bitter rivalry with Gary Barlow.

He said: «My problem has always been with Gary. It was always with Gary.
«I wanted to crush him. I wanted to crush the memory of the band — and I didn’t let go.
«You know, even when he was down, I didn’t let go. And for that, I sincerely apologise.»

Robbie rejoined the band in 2009 but left again in 2011 after signing a solo record deal with Universal Music.

At the time he told The Sun: «The gigs have been absolutely amazing – the best period of my career so far with those boys. Sharing it with somebody is much better than doing it by yourself, but then ego, want, need and a whole heap of other things kick in.

«And you start preparing for your own tour… and the other boys are going away for a bit and I don’t really know what’s on the cards with them. But we have to ride again, we have to – it’s too much fun.»

Robbie’s songs with Take That include Everything Changes, Could It Be Magic and Relight My Fire (featuring Lulu).

Despite appeals for him to get in touch, the DJ had taken a secret holiday to Thailand and checked into a luxury villa in Krabi in the south of the country on June 7.

He was last seen alive in the morning on June 9 ordering breakfast to be sent to his room, which was the same day that housekeepers say they saw a ‘’chubby Thai woman’’ leaving.

Hotel staff became concerned they had not seen him since.

They were horrified when they checked the property on Tuesday morning and found his naked body on the bed.

Christopher had a green plastic bag wrapped around his head which strapped in place with duct tape. There were also signs that he had recently ejaculated, according to police.

Officers are now investigating the bizarre death after hotel staff reportedly said that they had seen a ‘’chubby Thai woman with pale skin’’ leaving his room on June 9, which was also the last day Christopher was seen alive.

MYSTERY SEX WORKER

They believe that the mystery local woman is likely to have been a sex worker but police do not know whether she was with Christopher before or after he was last seen.

Lieutenant Colonel Chavalit Petchsripia, Director of Ao Nang district Police Station in Krabi province, said they had initially written off the death as suicide but would now investigate further.

The police chief said: ‘’The initial theory was that Mr Christopher Faust had committed suicide.

‘’However, the investigation team is now tracking images from the CCTV in the hotel again.

«The body is also being sent to the forensic institute to prove the cause of death. Police are also coordinating with relatives and informing the embassy.’’

Police said that in the room there were two half-full glasses of water on a table.

There was also a receipt for a roll of red duct tape, which was strapped round Christopher’s head without being cut and still attached the body of the roll.

Christopher’s valuable belongings, including his laptop, passport, credit cards and wallet, had not been stolen and there was no sign of a violent struggle or robbery.

Lieutenant Colonel Petchsripia added: «There is a suspicion that the death could be related to an autoerotic game and it was an accident. There was sperm on the dead man’s body.

«One witness also reported that they had seen a chubby woman leave the room on June. We need to check if that was involved.’’

Police in Hannover made an appeal to find Christopher on May 23.

They said they had searched hospitals in the area and contacted the missing man, urging him to contact friends or relatives.

They said ambulance crews had approached one man who matched Christopher’s description and said «we assume the man was the missing 39-year-old’’ but he had ‘’disappeared before the police arrived’’.

A spokesman for Hannover Police said in the appeal that they believed Christopher had «shaved his head and beard’’ which matched the image of the Christoper when he had his picture taken at Thai immigration.
